My Hobbies and Interests

My Hobbies

There are two sides of having a wide range of hobbies and interests—positive, and negative. One of the things on the positive side is I always have something to do that interests me, so I don’t get so bored even if I’m alone. The negative side is I have become like “jack-of-all-trades, master of none.”

Jill of all trades, master of none

“Jack (or Jill) of all trades, master of none” is a figure of speech referring to a person who knows how to do a little bit of everything, but (sometimes) has no time to master a particular thing. I have stumbled upon on Wikipedia that in many languages, there are sayings and terms which resemble the “Jack of all trades.” They can mean positive or negative. These are the sayings I have chosen:

  • “Equipped with knives all over, yet none is sharp” (from Cantonese)
  • “Thousand tasks artist” (from Danish and Norwegian)
  • “Many talents is no talent” (from Japanese)
  • “You aim for everything, but you hit nothing” (from Mexico)
  • “A man of twelve talents has nothing to eat for dinner” (from Korean)

Well, maybe some of us are created to be like that. It starts, of course, from curiosity and interest in learning new things, and then just enjoy doing them! Whatever the reasons are why there are Jacks and Jills of all trades, I believe that God has given us talents which we should use and work on to increase and multiply.

Read The Parable of the Talents Matthew 25:14-30.
